Historically, a lot of years the first snow had been Halloween, October 31st. This caused child Heather to wonder why the gods of holiday planning decided to make Halloween on a day everyone would have to wear their parkas, hats, boots and gloves over their carefully constructed costumes.
Of course, then we would trick or treat at night. Now the thing seems to be trick or treat at the mall, zoo or church in the afternoon so the parka over the costume thing wouldn’t be so problematic. I suppose kids who grow up with it like it is now don’t miss the old way. Providence moves forward.
This year, the first storm arrived October 29th.
Even though the depth did not exceed 3 inches where I live, It disrupted my travel plans. My intended destination (Canon City) got several inches. However, homebound as I was I must confess I enjoyed the day. I missed the snow when I lived in climates that didn’t have it. Aside from feeling like I need to invest in chains for my car, I feel prepared for another winter in Colorado. Bring it on! It’s time to get out the warm clothes again.

I love the texture of the fluffy snow when it is very cold. The snowflakes keep their form and stay powdery. It isn’t as easy to make snowballs or snowmen until the sun softens it a little, but this moment the temps remained in the 20s.
Will it warm up for awhile? Will we start getting more frequent snow? Will this be a mild or severe winter? In Colorado, nature keeps you guessing.
